I'm sure you could rig something up with some serious work, but I'd suggest sticking with electrical. The electrical switch controls a motor that is attached directly to your transfer case. There's no linkage there to work with. The motor turns a shaft to shift between 2wd, 4wd hi, and 4wd low.
You may need to replace the 4x4 engager switch or replace the fuse in your fuse box.
What linkage?

The hazard button alone can't be replaced. You will need to replace the complete signal switch which is called a multifunction switch.

how do you replace3 dimmer switch 1987 chevy silverado 4 x 4
Howdy, Pushbutton 4x4 use a electric motor to move the shifter fork in the transfer case to 4x4 and then into 4wd Lo range. This unit has a electric motor, a small gear box and a contact switch inside this little unit that is mounted to the transfer case. The contact switch is very light duty, and will either wear out or corrode from road salts, water, etc. I have had many apart and the only way to fix this problem is to change the complete unit (Around $175.00) as they are not repairable. I have had a few apart to see exactly the workings. What is happening is when your switch in in one position on the dash, the switch will make a contact in the contact switch on the motor telling the computer to turn on a light, which in turn makes to electric motor engage the transfer case into another position that you didn't call for, like 4x4 or 4x4 LO. Replace this motor assy or it will tear out your transfer case. E-mail with more questions. cowboysairranch@wildblue.net
You can't. There are 2 many other electronic devices that run through the switch. You must replace the switch.
My Explorer did that and I had to take the dash panel out where you will find a black or green box right beside where the radio goes, you will have to replace it.
On a 1995 Suzuki Sidekick 4X4 with an automatic transmission, the backup light switch is typically located on the transmission itself. To access it, you'll need to raise the vehicle safely and remove any undercarriage covers if present. The switch is usually mounted on the transmission housing near the gear selector linkage; you may need to disconnect the electrical connector and unscrew the switch to replace it if necessary. Always consult the vehicle's service manual for specific details and procedures.
