Yes it can, it can also leave an infection. Not always but its possible. Grab a glass of water wand add a teaspoon of salt, take some of that DONT SWALLOW and gargle it. You can swish but not TOO hard or else you can dislodge the blood clot which you WANT so the gums could heal seal itself together. Using salt water will encourage healing, and kill unwanted bacteria. Oh and also don't SPIT, just let it fall from your mouth or spit with slight pressure... NOT TOO MUCH presssure for this can also dislodge the blood clot. What happens when the blood clot is gone too early? Better hope its still bleeding in there otherwise you'll have a good chance of getting a dry socket, which is painful, very painful. It's basically a bare bone sticking out getting inflamed. If you have stitches though then you're in luck, its sealed so the blood clot
(if formed) won't dislodge so easily.
Hell maybe its not even food in your mouth. It could be rotting blood and the stitches that are giving a bad odor and smell.
Going through wisdom tooth recovery myself so I've been searching up a lot.
