Providing they have been together since birth then yes. In fact gerbils are very sociable and should be kept with same-sex company as a lonely gerbil has been proven to live signficantly less time than one with company.
Unfortunately they are very territorial and if you do have a lonely adult then the only way to introduce a friend of the same gender to them is via the splitcage method. There are plenty of guides to this online.
For the most part, yes, they do. Gerbils, like other animals, have individual personalities, however. Some gerbils will not get along with other gerbils, regardless of gender.
