It depends on which perspective you believe. Many people don't believe in ghosts and say there is no scientific evidence to prove they exist.

Of those that believe ghosts or spirits exist, they usually lump them into at least 2 categories. There are the earthbound spirits and the dark entities. The earthbound spirits are those who once inhabited a body, but for whatever reason, were unable or unwilling to cross over. The dark entities are those who never had a body of their own but which are primarily evil in nature. One way that spirits can get revenge is to possess other people. If you believe in reincarnation, then it could be possible to be possessed for several lifetimes. They could make the person do evil things against their will so they can suffer the consequences. There was a case history where a little boy was good-natured and then suddenly started lying and stealing out of the blue. Someone consulted with licensed psychologists who also used occult practices on his behalf. He had a couple of entities attached to him. One of them claimed that he lied on him back during the time of the Revolutionary War and an angry mob killed him. The spirit admitted to attaching to the boy out of revenge for having been lied on and beat to death by an angry mob. After getting the spirit to cross over, the boy's demeanor changed greatly. The next time his parents asked him to get ready for bed, he didn't try to put up a fight, and his negative behaviors stopped.

Assuming ghosts are real, they can also possess buildings. In an apartment building in Lexington, NC, 3 different people who stayed in room 13 reported seeing a girl in the room with them. They all described her the same, and she was polite. There was no way she could get inside. The door was locked and chained, and there were no way to get to the windows from outside. One of the 3 reporting her presence practiced witchcraft and she communicated with this girl. She learned that she was put out of her home at a young age by her parents in the late 1800's. Not having any other way to take care of herself, she turned to the oldest profession. Anyway, one of her clients killed her. We can assume because of the attitudes about prostitution back then, she felt too guilty to come into the light and fully cross over to the other side. Very often, such spirits are frightened, traumatized, or scared. But then there are the ones that are angry, spiteful, and hateful. They possess people and buildings and wreak havoc. You hear of houses where objects fly, doors slam on their own, lights keep turning themselves on, beds rock on their own, etc. One woman claims that her deceased husband comes to visit. She might be with someone and his spirit comes to express disapproval that she is with someone else. So the bed will rock and carry on with her and whoever else in it, without either doing the rocking.

So yes, to those who believe in ghosts, the occult, and spirits, ghosts can and do get revenge.
