Of course they can. Whether you're allowed to put them in the lake is a different matter, and I guess it depends what else is in the lake. But yes, they can survive and live in lakes.

∙ 14y agoThere is a distinct possibility that the goldfish would survive but you should never put goldfish into any rivers or waterways. They are a man developed species and do not belong in nature. If you do release goldfish into the wild you will be creating problems for the natural ecology of the waterway. If you wish to get rid of a goldfish, try giving it away or return it to a pet shop.

∙ 14y agoNo, a goldfish would not survive in an esturary. This is because esturaries contain 1/2 freshwater and 1/2 saltwater- goldfish need freshwater. Another reason is goldfish are not wild animals- they are not built to withstand the pulls strong currents and their bright color would quickly draw the attention of predators to themselves.
