The handler of Koko the gorilla has made claims that Koko is "learning" to read, but if this ability has ever been demonstrated to a reasonably skeptical audience, I'm unaware of it.
Washoe, a chimpanzee, was apparently able to recognize a limited symbology and "communicate" by pressing buttons labelled with those symbols. These were sort of like the "international sign for" signs, so it's not quite the same thing as really reading, and I'm uncertain whether or not any effort was ever made to prove that he was actually reading the symbols as opposed to using them at a "when I push the third button in the fourth row they give me a banana" level.
