A horse that tends to spook may be frightened by the fringes if he sees them flying around when you are cantering or something. You can get him used to them by showing them to him, flapping the fringes around him, and rubbing them around his flanks, where they will be when riding, until he realizes they won't hurt him.

half chaps do up at the side, gaiters do up at the back. Gaiters are normally leather, Chaps are sometimes leather, sometimes other materials, such as suade. Gaiters are used to create the effect of the traditional long boots, but only if matched in colour to your jodpur boots. Chaps are normally just used for everyday riding, to protect your legs.

Either but I would choose leather! If you are just beginning riding then I would go with the suede because they are a little bit cheaper, but if you are a more advanced hunter/jumper then you should definitely invest in the leather ones!

This depends on how the half chaps are shaped and if they have a zipper. If they have a zipper, then align that properly (usually with the outside of the calf) and see where the stretch panel would be located. In most brands of half chap the panel will sit to the outside or rear of the leg. If in doubt call the manufacturer or look at their website for more details.
