The equipment used in horseback riding for english, is a saddle, a girth, a bridle, reins, maybe a martingale, a helmet, maybe a breastplate, and boots, half chaps, or full chaps.

You can wear: Helmet, riding gloves, boots/chaps

Western: Saddle, bridle, reins, maybe a martingale and/or a breastplate or helmet, boots & chaps.

Note: Western ewuipment is built differently from English

Also, it is posssible to ride without a saddle (& girth) or bridle.
