Best Answer

No. Rhubarb contains levels of oxalate acid that, if the leaves and plants are fed intentionally, can cause high levels of toxicity in cattle. Acute toxicity causes electrolyte imbalance in the body and kidney failure. If rhubarb leaves are fed in high amounts, you could potentially kill your cattle.

Yes. If you are feeding rhubarb leaves intentionally, the toxicity rating is high, and can cause ill effects in cattle. Oxalate is soluble which enables it to affect electrolyte levels such as the balance of calcium and magnesium or cause a decrease in normal kidney function. Poisoning can be acute if large amounts of oxalates are consumed quickly (like in the case if you feed your cows a large amount of rhubarb leaves on purpose), or chronic, if small amounts are being fed over a long period of time. Affected animals will appear depressed, weak and may stagger and tremble. Often they will drink and urinate more often as kidney function declines. Diarrhea may also be noted. Affected animals may die if the electrolyte balance is extremely compromised or if kidney failure is absolute.

There is the argument that it takes five kilograms of leaves to kill a 145 lb person, because, according to the LD50 toxicity analysis, rhubarb leaves supposedly only have 0.6 to 0.72 % oxalate content. However, oxalate isn't the only substance found in the leaves that can be to blame for toxic effects on humans and animals: oxalic acid and anthraquinone glycosides are also present which may also cause poisoning, along with oxalate acid, to those humans and animals that eat the leaves.

I would not risk it - there are plenty of other things to try. Rhubarb contains oxalic acid which is moderately toxic - the leaves are too toxic for humans to eat but we can cope with the quantity in the stems.
