Yes. There was a girl on a trail ride once, and a coyote came and the horse spooked, throwing the girl. She was knocked out and the coyote was coming towards her, looking to eat. Instead of running, which is a horse's first instinct, it came back and faught the coyote off. (no lie). It stayed with her until she awoke, then when she did awake, the girl was able to lay on the horse's back while it made its way back to the farm. Note: the girl had rescued this horse a few weeks back. A horse in known to protect it's master, or it could be known as the "leader" or their young. But really it depends on the connection between horse and rider.

Horses can push or shove people but, they can't really attack people. The reason is because, even though they are over 1200 pounds, they don't mean to attack. They can spook and basically destroy everything in its path so it can flee but if you think of it this way humans are actually attacking horses not the other way around. Why? Because humans have guns and other weapons which is an advantage over hooves and teeth. Horses have been hunted and killed by poachers so much that there is only one type of wild horse left. Horses are the ones that are afraid and scared and have no way for crying for help. Do not ever think horses will attack and please do not try to hurt theses poor beauties. They are the sweetest thinks ever and they will never hurt you unless something scares them.

It is unusual for horses to attack humans and occurrences generally depend on the temperament of the animal and the situation. Some mares with new or young foals, horses that feel trapped and can't escape from a situation by running will defend themselves or their offspring. Attacks aren't always fear based and may be the result of a young horse testing it's limits. Stallions are most likely to be aggressive and improper training and handling as well as a horse with an inherently bad temperament has resulted in injury and sometimes death. Stallions in particular are often isolated from other horses, and live in and environment that can create emotional instability and aggressive behavior.
Horses can be made aggressive through abuse.
All that being said, most human injuries are caused by poor handling, inadequate training (of the human and or the horse), youthful exuberance, or humans who are inattentive to environmental situations that trigger an unwanted flight response. Many injuries are caused by horses that have been allowed to be pushy and disrespectful.

Finally, injuries occur because humans have an unrealistic idea that horses are inherently gentle and would never intentionally harm their human companion. Horses bite, kick and even bully herd mates. Stallions fight for mares. Successful interaction with horses includes an understanding of their true nature as well as our own.

If you mean without human help, then they stay together in groups called herds, which offer protection from predators and other dangers.
