Dr. Grimm says: Well there are different ways to get colic-(twisted intestines commonly)- Horses can get it by eating sand with their food on accident, and young puppies can get it by drinking cold milk, I am not sure on what animals can get colic, but I am sure you can get a basic idea on the anotomy of the animals closely related to those above.
Dr. Grimm
Horses can get colic from a variety of things. Colic simply means "abdominal pain" and doesn't specify a cause. Some horses get colic due to an impaction in the intestines, which blocks the flow of material moving through the intestines; the same issue can happen with a large bubble of gas in the intestines that prevents material from moving through. Both impaction and gas colics can sometimes be treated without surgery depending upon the severity of the pain.
There is also strangulation colic, in which the intestines have tied themselves in a knot and have cut off blood flow to the intestines as well as completey blocked material from moving through. This is a surgical emergency.
Horses that live on sandy pastures or paddocks can get sand colic from too much heavy grit in their intestines. This can sometimes be treated without surgery, and is easily prevented by moving the horse out of the sandy area.
Horses can get colic by being stressed let's say by another horse. That stress could turn into a vice that the certain horse can't help doing. Let's say it took up crib biting. Chewing on things could upset the horses body and also wreck its teeth to make it harder to eat in the future.
If your horse has crib biting as a vice you should think of stopping it right away by buying a special collar to prevent it from getting worse into making you spend more money on medicine for colic.
Hope this helped!

Spasmotic colic is where the gut is spasming, sort of like a belly ache. Impaction colic is the more dangerous of the two, and it happens when there is an impaction in the gut somewhere. This can usually lead to surgery to remove the impaction.
