yes all the time. ie if you have a C-OH and react with SOCl2 you will now have C-Cl. if you have CH4 and a Fl comes in to and, one H will leave, bonding Fl and C. H is always the easiest substituent to replace because they can be thrown off molecules so easily and readily.
