It can be, however AC power is generally produced directly by an AC alternator/generator.

A power switching circuit called an inverter. You could also use an electromechanical motor-generator: DC motor turning an alternator.
It may not be possible to physically convert AC generator to DC generator. What can be done is that 'Rectifier' of suitable capacity can be connected to the out put of AC generator to get DC supply.
Such conversions are often inefficient and/or expensive. It requires an external power supply or battery charger to convert AC into DC.

It is wise to start thinking of power in DC circuit. If a load is connected to a power source in a DC circuit, the corresponding VOLT CURRENT plot both will be in the positive quadrant. Of course, polarity must be correct. Now if the CURRENT (in the same polarity arrangement) happens to be in the negative quadrant, the power is said to be reversed. The same can be thought in an AC circuit. Taking a half wave cycle of both VOLT and CURRENT, one can apply the same understanding as in the DC circuit. If the AC circuit is capacitive or inductive, VOLT and CURRENT waves will be shifted according to the value of the capacitive or inductive load, and here one has to be aware. I assume by good regulation you mean a minimal voltage drop internal to the generator. Minimizing this will inherently increase the short circuit current, because it requires minimizing the internal impedance of the generator.

Converting D/C into A/C is very expensive. You can use inverters to switch the direction of the current but you would probably be better off to replace your DC generator with an AC generator and if you need both AC and DC power then use a rectifier (inexpensive when compared to inverters) to convert the AC to a DC current.
