No, Gerbils are recognized by scent. If there is ever a gerbil that comes along without the same scent they will be veiwed as a threat to the familiar or single gerbil and attack it for fear of safety. Even two familiar gerbils are separated for hours or days they will respond as strangers and enemys when they meet again.

What are the nicest gerbils?

I think that an older male and a much younger male gerbil are the nicest.. Female gerbils from my experience can be really mean and nasty to each other and you. Boys in general =much better.

Can a older male gerbil get a younger female gerbil pregnet?

Yes. Male gerbils, no matter how old they are, can impregnate female gerbils. Most female gerbils can no longer conceive after 2 years of age. Either way, it's never wise to put a male and female together unless you intend to breed and provide for several litters. Gerbils are not easy to find homes for.

Once i had 3 gerbils one of them died. Now they all look sad and bored. Can i introduce a younger gerbil to my older ones?

you can, but its a lot of effort, so it probably would be easier for you not to... I have to get a divided cage and put your older gerbils in one side and the new gerbil on the other side. You swap them every 2/3 days because this will get them used to being in each others' territories. after about 2/3 weeks you can introduce them together and they should hopefully like each other.

Do gerbils get depressed when their family they live with die and they are about 3 weeks old?

Maybe it depends on te gerbil. Some will be so sad they stop eating. This can be very bad. Try to keep your gerbil busy through the hard time. If its an older gerbil it might be better to let your gerbil live alone for the rest of its life. I f you get it a new friend it might be mad. But then you would have to go through the same thing all over again. It wouldn't be good.

Why do gerbils eat there babies?

Gerbils will only eat their babies if the pup is dead, if there is not enough resources, such as water and food, or space, or if the mother is stressed. If there is another gerbil in the tank, other than the mother and the father or an older sibling, that gerbil might also eat the pups as a territorial issue. their spine will start to stick out and they will act very weak. there might be terms of eating alot, fighting with the male, sleeping alot, getting really fat, and not wanting to be held. so if you think your gerbil is pregnant then feel it's lower stomach .. and you may want to leave your gerbil alone this will cause allot of stress to her if you hold her often..
