I need to replace the back window of a 1999 Nissan Altima how do I do this
easier to buy a complete new light mate
it is easier to replace the whole headlight unit (as the glass is sealed to the body), but, if you have just the glass... remove the grill (3 screws), remove the headlight unit (one pop-up, 3 small bolts), place headlight unit on workbench, remove 3 retainer clips, cut sealant around glass, remove glass, apply new sealant to cleaned surface, press glass in place, reverse the above procedure... or just buy the whole thing off ebay ($89)
the glass cover on the headlight is not servicable, they are glued during assembly. you have to replace the entire headlight globe or headlight assembly.
There are two metal clips behind the each headlight. Pull these upward, and the entire headlight will come out very easily. To replace the bulb, do so without touching the glass parts of the halogen bulb, and replace the headlight. Secure with the two clips. See, it was easy.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN...HEART OF GLASS
Nearside is easy, just remove the rubber cover at the rear of the headlight and the terminals attached to the bulb. Then remove the spring clip. Replacement is a reversal of removal - do not touch the bulb glass! Off-side is essentially the same, but the windscreen wash filler neck needs to be removed to improve access. You do this by turning it, similar to a bayonet lightbulb fitting.
If a plastic lens, drill a very small hole at the bottom to let water drain out. If a glass lens, you will have to replace.
it depends on what the headlight cover is made out of. But here's a suggestion. For a 1989 Caprice Classic with a glass headlight, it costs $243. It's expensive because of the size but varies from makes and sizes of cars
Check with your insurance company or agent. Many cover glass replacement.
Headlight Bulb Replacement * Open the hood and locate the bulb assembly on the back of the headlight housing. On the right side headlight remove the two screws and the plastic shield for access to the bulb * Unplug the electrical connector and detach the retaining ring * Withdraw the bulb assembly from the headlight housing * Without touching the glass with your bare fingers insert the new bulb into the assembly Headlight Housing Replacement* Disconnect the negative battery cable * Remove the headlight bulb * Remove the radiator grille * Remove the parking light housing * Remove the retaining nuts and bolts detach the housing and withdraw it from the car
From under the hood, twist off the cover behind the headlight, then turn the collar that holds the bulb in place. Remove the bulb and replace it, reversing the above directions. DON'T TOUCH THE GLASS ON THE NEW BULB, DIRT OR GREASE WILL CAUSE IT TO BURN OUT QUICKLY.
