They may be able to eat them but I very much doubt if they would live on them for long. Jack Dempseys are cichlids and should have a diet to suit including live food such as earth worms.
It is the size of the food fish that matters. Even a baby Jack Dempsy will eat any live fish small enough to fit into its mouth.

She would certainly have eaten fish, and perhaps potatoes, but the potatoes would most likely have been Hayman potatoes, not the Irish potatoes that we are familiar with.

Mystery snail (Pomacea Bridgesii) also called Apple snail are OK with the smaller fish but to put them in with large and aggressive cichlids like the Jack Dempsey (Cichlasoma octofasciatum) is begging to have them killed and eaten. The simple answer is no they are not compatible.

yep your 10 inch jd is going to eat your 15inch bala shark... think about that for a min. not to be rude but research the fish your planning on buying. A jd might eat a baby bala but a goldfish would eat a baby bala, a goldfish would eat a baby jd to. Fish eat smaller fish no matter what the species is. All in all a fullgrown jd and a full grown bala would be fine together.
