∙ 15y agoLand hermit crabs breath through modified gills which require a higher level of humidity for them to be able to convert the oxygen in the air into something they can use. They can survive for several minutes under water but cannot live there. Likewise marine hermit crabs may spend time on the surface but must return to the water or they will die because they cannot sufficiently convert air oxygen into something they can use.
