If chambered in 45ACP
the 1917 colt revolver fired a rim 45 cal cartridge. however, half moon clips were used to insert 45 cal. auto shells and then place the inserts into the cylinder. In this manner both the 45 cal. rim cartridge and the 45 cal. semi-auto rimless cartridge can be fired from the 1917 revolver.
simply put .... no... you need long caliber bullets to fit in the chamber properly Actually, if you have some half moon clips, you can shoot .45acp in a .45LC. You will not be pleased with the results though. Buy some .45 LC ammunition please.
Actually, the cartridges are .45 ACP (automatic Colt Pistol) and .45 Colt (the cowboy era revolver cartridge. There is not really a Colt 45 Long. Can a revolver shoot both? Some can- they are chambered for the Colt .45 -but to shoot .45 ACP they need a "half moon clip"- a strip of metal that holds 3 of the shorter .45 ACP cartridges. 2 of those fill a 6 shot revolver. The PISTOL (not revolver) that shoots the .45 ACP cannot shoot the .45 Colt- no groove for the extractor to pull a fired cartridge out of the chamber, and it is too long.
The Model 1911 is a semi-automatic pistol chambered in .45ACP. The Model 1917 is a large frame revolver also chambered in .45ACP but using half-moon or full-moon clips to hold the rounds.

A revolver designed for a revolver cartridge cannot, but some revolvers are designed to fire rimless cartridges. S&W and others made revolvers in .45 ACP, the Ruger Speed Six/Security Six was available in 9mm Parabellum.. they use full or half moon clips to hold the rounds in place and load the cylinder, rather than the traditional method of loading a revolver.
correction........made about 1927
With the kit in it's original box, including the bullet mold, percussion caps, powder flask and other items, they can be worth up to a million dollars. Many have sold at auction for over a half million dollars. The most common going rate for an original Colt percussion revolver in it's original kit is between $500,000 to $750,000. The pistol by itself would bring less, although quite a lot.
Sorry don't know the value, but based on the serial # 81238F, it was produced around 1959.
No. Half cock is a feature of single action revolvers, most Rossis are double action.
A Colt police positive special with that serial number was made in the latter half of 1921.
