If the registered driver has died, then legally there is no insurance on the vehicles, because the person who opened the insurance account ceases to exist.
You need to contact the insurance company and let them know the registered driver is deceased. They will have better information, since policy can differ depending on company and region.

Your sons car is insured in your name with him as named driver Can you register the car to him?

If the vehicle is registered to him, he will need his own policy. You must have an "insurable interest" in an item to insure it under your own name.

Can you insure a vehicle that is registered in someone elses name?

This can probably vary from state to state. I was able to add a car registered in my bosses name on my insurance, but he had to listed as another driver. Sometimes the registered person will have to be added to your insurance policy. It may also vary by insurance carrier. your best solution is to call your insurance company and ask them their policy on this or when callin to get insurance quotes - ask.

Whose auto insurance is primary in California registered owner or permissive driver?

The insurance on a vehicle should be in the name of the Registered owner of the vehicle. Any permissive driver should also be added to the policy as a driver if you are a regular driver or if you live in the household. Either of these requires that you be listed on the policy not both of these. The owner of the vehicle is bound by legal contract to add any regular drivers and household members. If these people are not added to the policy, the contract has been voided and the insurance company can decide not to pay any claims involving such unlisted drivers.

Who is Liable for an accident if the driver of the vehicle that is at fault has insurance but the car he is driving is not registered in his name?

It really depends on the laws of your State and the policies involved. That being said, usually the policy on the car in question is primary in the resolution of any claim, and then the driver's policy would be in a secondary position.

The insurance should be under the name of the person to whom the car is titled and registered. Also, if the person who legally owns the car is not the person who will be the main driver of the car, the person who will be the driver on the car should be added to the policy.

Your name must be on the insurance policy, otherwise you are not a covered driver under that insurance policy. Failure to disclose a known driver can void any coverages afforded by the policy and is a well known form of insurance fraud.
