Older cars are heavier than new cars and often survive wrecks because of their bulk. However newer cars have more safety technology to protect them.
Basically, newer cars go faster than older cars which increases the likeliness of accidents occuring. Newer cars have more airbags than older cars. And some older cars do not have them at all. Older cars may not have features such as crumple zones which protect the front of the car better. Seatbelts is also an issue, older cars may just have lap belts, or none at all.
