It all depends where you go in Cape Town. Avoid tourist areas for one. I may be biased as we have a diamond cutting factory where we sell to the public at wholesale prices, so we will definitely be cheaper than most places. But when looking for cheaper stones, be careful when jewellers offer you something real cheap as the stone might have been cut with terrible proportions. Insist on a GIA or EGL certificate and check that the cut has been graded with an excellent or at the worst a very good cut. Anything else is what we in the industry call a swindled stone. Jewelleres that don't display prices do so for obvious reasons. Once you have found what you like at a credible dealer or jeweler, contact the dealer or jeweler and ask them to send you a copy of the certificate and a magnified photo of the diamond.
