I assume the question is whether or not one identical twin can develop MS and not the other.
First, a point of clarification. You are not "born" with MS, to the best of our knowledge. MS develops over a number of years, presenting between the ages of 20 and 50.
More specifically, can you be genetically predisposed to MS? Epidemiological studies have confirmed that there is a genetic component to MS. The chance of developing MS in the general population is about 1 in 750. But persons with first-degree relatives who also have MS have their risk increased to anywhere between 1 in 100 and 1 in 40.
The risk is not all genetic, though. For example, if one identical twin develops MS, the other twin has a 1 in 4 chance of developing MS. If genetics were entirely the cause, the other twin should have a 100% chance. The fact that the chance is actually 25% shows that there are other factors involved in determining whether or not a person will develop MS, such as ethnicity, familial national origin, geography, sex, and some heretofore undiscovered infectious trigger.
