The legend of the werewolf ("wer" being old English for "man") dictates that a human being could change from wolf to man and back. Often this change is attributed to the influence of a full moon. To become a werewolf one had to be infected, that is, be bitten by a werewolf. Something in the werewolf's saliva apparently contains a werewolf mutagen. Where the first werewolf came from is never fully explained by the legends, though, as with most dark creatures, it was attributed to demonic origin.
Outside of legend the werewolf has never been considered real. Skeptics like to offer theories that the idea sprung from those suffering from hypertrichosis which causes excessive hair growth over much of the body or who suffer from lycanthrophy, which is a disorder of the mind which has one believing one is a wolf. The idea of being influenced by the moon is not original, in fact, this is where the English word "lunatic" comes from and indeed there is some evidence to suggest that some people are susceptible to excitability at peak times of lunar activity. Whatever the case, it has withstood as one of the more enduring legends of things that go bump in the night.
