Yes. If they are locked in place. Not just starting out which is considered freshly twisted down.

My husband has dreads and his has been growing for the last 6 years.

They get washed often, but I recommend using a moisturizing shampoo and also you can condition them too.

That's in case you have dry scalp or to keep them from looking so dry.

It's also good to oil your scalp too.

Just my personal recommendation.

You can also get them professionally clean without water such as using dry shampoos, some of them are not recommended as they dry your hair out and can lead to damaged hair. Most stylist will remove debris and dirt using some old fashion ways.

Are dreads gross?

Like any hair style, it depends how well they are taken care of. There is a popular myth that people who wear dreads don't wash their hair, when, in fact, in order to maintain dreadlocks properly, you're actually required to wash them. Most people with dreadlocks do find that they don't have to wash their hair quite as often as people without, because the act of brushing one's hair releases oils from their scalp, making their hair greasy. However, they generally have to wash their hair a couple times a week to keep it from getting dirty. It also depends on how the reds are formed. For instance, dreads started with dread wax or dread kits can get dirt and water trapped in wax and become moldy. Dreads normally formed naturally are clean in fact, but in an attempt to profit from dreading, salons and "dread companies" push methods and products that do make unhealthy dreads.

Why do people where dreadlocks?

They don't wash there hair because it takes the dread locks apart. The water sinks in then takes out all the material that holds the dreads together.

How freeform dreads?

Wash your hair, keep it clean and it will dread over time. A lot of people dont have the patients for organic dreads. So you'll get some people telling you you should twist your hair. Do not listen to those people half the time they don't have dreads and 100% of the time they don't know what they're talking about. Anyways if you decide to do it. Go for it and don't look back. Enjoy your journey Bless up.

Is dreads dirty?

No!! It is a common misconception that dreads should not be washed. The exact opposite is true. Washing your dreads keeps them clean and smelling good as they should be! Many people use a baking soda wash as it is gentle on the hair and removes residue, something you DON'T want in your dreads.
