Pine can be used but it doesn't burn clean. It contains large amounts of tars and over time will leave a heavy creosote buildup. It is a good burning wood though. I have used it many times. It also tends to "pop" explode so be sure to have a safety screen to keep the embers from flying on you or your floor.
