No; podcasts are simply audio files (most often MP3s) that can be automatically downloaded to your computer and placed on a media player.
The files are "advertised" using a type of RSS feed that software on your computer periodically check to see if any new content is available. Most typically, this software will then automatically download any new content that was found, and put it on your media device.
iTunes certainly does this (http://www.apple.com/podcasting/), but so does Windows Media Player (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/articles/podcasts.mspx) and a number of other pieces of software.

Podcast will work with any ipod, including nanos. If you have nano 1st generation or 2nd generation, you can only use audio podcasts because you cant watch videos with these versions. The new 3rd generation, however, will allow you to watch video podcasts and listen to audio podcasts.
