∙ 15y agoI'd read that Prune Juice was effective in relieving constipation (there are lots of references to this on various mother and baby websites).
Having been constipated for 3 days I bought a carton of prune juice from a local supermarket. I also bought a can of Prunes. Some references say that the canned prunes are more effective.
I took a glass full of the juice. It's really quite horrible, in my opinion. And actually didn't seem to have any effect on me.
The next morning I added 3 prunes into a small bowel of porriage. They don't really taste that bad, nothing as bad as the juice. Within about 30 minutes I was on the toilet and managed to pass a small amount. About 90 minutes after taking the prunes I was on there again and had a wonderful clear out. I don't know if that was a direct result of the prunes, but I was impressed.

∙ 10y agoPrune juice contains large amounts of sorbitol, a sugar-like substance that's poorly absorbed and therefore draws lots of water into the gut (a purified form of sorbitol is used medically as a laxative, and also as a sweetener in sugar-free gum and some candies).
