Most likely not naturally, this is not exactly suggested either if you are trying to start a new breed or a genetic mutation. This can result in many health problems such as deformities. It would most likely not work because although rats and gerbils are both rodents they are not in the same family, they are both in Rodentia though. So the blunt answer is no, do not try it either because of the possible consequences. The gerbil and rat may not get along either.

No. Although the gerbil is a species of rat, the eggs and sperm are not the same.
