Red Eared Sliders can indeed eat lettuce. But a better feeding option would be darker leafed plants such as collared, dandelion and mustard greens. Other vegetable and fruit matter that your turtle can certainly eat and will probably enjoy are shredded or chopped carrot, apple, squash, green beans(whole or chopped depending on the size of your turtle), and melon.
Red Eared Slider Turtles, especially the younger ones, prefer a slightly carnivorous diet of earthworms, crickets, mealworms, bloodworms, shrimp, krill, tadpoles and so on. They can also eat feeder fish, but this is not advised unless bought fresh from a trusted breeder as they may carry hidden parasites.
They can also eat leafy vegetables such as lettuce, kale, cabbage, dandelion greens and so on.
Never feed iceberg lettuce, which is mostly just water and has very little nutritional value, even for humans, so it will cause diarrhoea in smaller animals like turtles.
They especially love eating aquatic plants such as anacharis, azolla (fairy moss), hyacinth, water lettuce and duckweed.
Red-eared slider turtles do not, or very rarely, naturally eat fruits. Tomatoes are classed as a fruit.
It is not advised, if you feel you have to, that you hardly ever feed red-eared slider turtles any or too much fruit. Because their bodies have no way to break down the natural sugars in fruits, as they are evolved for a carnivorous and leafy-greens diet.
You can give little bits of fruit such as tomatoes (including the different tomato species such as cherry and grape tomatoes). However make sure you only give a little and that it is finely chopped. Too much and too often will cause diarrhoea for your turtle. I would suggest no more than two very small helpings of fruit as a treat a month.
