are you sure it is spider mites? there are powders dusts you can put directly on birds but to get rid of the problem you need to clean and spray the coop area including bedding (all fresh) and laying boxes. I provide my birds with an area where they can take a "dust bath" they dig a hole and throw dirt on them selves. I put diatamcious earth in it and it helps keep down bugs and scorpions. you can find diatamacious earth for this at feed stores it is kinda expensive $48 for 50 pounds here but a bag lasts about 2 years
Red mite is an awful problem for poultry - particularly in warmer months. It's easy to see them...simply lift the feathers around the neck and inspect between them. You can easily see a mite with the naked eye.
Your chickens may start to look 'ill' too - their combs will lose their colour and become very pale. They will go off their food and water and, if you don't get rid of that mite, they will die.
You need to ensure their houses are free from the mites (check the ends of their perches where they cluster), spray a poultry-friendly pesticide, and also dust the birds themselves with some form of mite killer.
It's a rotten job and they are incredibly difficult to get rid of once they are in the house. Good luck.
It will cause anemia to badly affected flocks of birds.
