If you are playing on Hardcore any companion can be killed, Rex included. Otherwise, companions will simply be knocked unconscious and can't be killed. If you never finish the quest Nothin But a Hound Dog, I believe Rex dies as part of the end game sequence. I've never not finished that quest though, so I'm not sure.

I find ED-E to be a lot better than Rex, particularly on hardcore mode. Rex has a high perception and no ranged attacks, so when he detects an enemy, he runs straight towards it and usually gets him handed to him. Plus, if you upgrade ED-E's attack abilities by lending him to the Followers of the Apocalypse, I find he can actually do more damage than any other companion. Also, he plays that sweet little tune whenever he enters a battle.
