i'd like to know too. my dad said old timers put rock salt in toilet tank, so water is salty and slowly kills roots in sewer pipes.
don't know if salt damages pipes though.
Salt in toilet works (in the toilet) because it avoids metal piping (traps & such) in sinks & tubs (which salt Will corrode). It is a most direct way to main drain, which today are clay pipe or PVC. My experience is that roots only grow into old Clay pipe fittings & joints. I've replaced a 'few' with PVC & had no further trouble. If you can afford the major expense.
But don't forget to irradicate the Source, as best you can.
Yes it will kill the roots, but it will also kill the soil around the roots. This is not a good way to kill tree roots.
The growth of tree roots is chemical, wedging(?), pushing thru the ground(?), would be a physical change.
I'm not quite sure, but I think that about 4.5kg of salt will kill a tree. I read about this on some forum....and I'm doing the experiment on the tree that is blocking my flat so we'll see...
Plant material that falls into water that is very low in oxygen, and is covered by additional layers of plant material and silt, will only partially decay. If these mats of partially decayed plant material are subsequently covered by additional layers of sediments, they can eventually be squeezed and compacted by the weight of the overburden, removing most of the water that was present, and be cemented together by minerals that have precipitated out of the disappearing fluids.
Well it has very strong hold fasts (roots) to keep it firmly attached to the rock but it also has air filled bladders to help it keep afloat when the tide comes in
There are two primary methods by which living organisms can and do break down rocks. The first is mechanical, which is commonly seen as a tree grows and spreads its roots. The tree roots burrow into the ground and into a crack in the rock, and as the root grows and widens, it forces the crack in the rock to increase. Eventually this results in the crack splitting the rock into two or more pieces. The other method is chemical. There are many organisms that secrete a variety of acidic and basic compounds, either as wastes or as a defense mechanism. Rocks are susceptible to dissolution or destruction from these chemicals.
Rock salt helps to kill tree roots that may be growing in your sewer line. You should try flushing 2 cups a week down your toilet.
If tree roots are in your septic system, you really need to seek professional help. Rock salt will kill tree roots but they will still need to be removed.
the plants roots sink into the rock and cracks the rock.
Yes, rock salt kills ivy roots. It nevertheless needs to be sufficient in proximity and quantity to do so. Sufficiently near and sufficiently sized, it overcomes ivy roots -- and all other area vegetation -- that ask for soluble nutrients and instead encounter dehydrating desiccants.

Certainly. You can kill a person with a rock, it all depends on where you hit them.
