Yes.
The average time span for short term memory is 18-20 seconds when there is an attempt to remember the item. And it can be much shorter, some argue even milliseconds when unattended to.
Echoic memory lasts for about 4-5 seconds. This occurs with auditory stimuli. An example is when you can "re-hear" something that was said to you, which you didn't initially pay attention to.
Therefore if someone had said something without consciously attending to what they were saying, after 4-5 seconds they may not recall what they had just said.
