You can survive without both of your kidneys, but life wouldn't be very enjoyable. You would need to undergo dialysis of the blood every other day to filter unwanted pollutants from the blood.

You can, however, happily survive a free independent life with only one kidney.

This isn't necessarily true. I know of a little boy who was born in July 2010 with no kidneys and is alive. He is a very sick little boy, but he is definitely alive and was born with no kidneys whatsoever, not just a small part of one. He is truly a miracle and have baffled doctors on how he has survived this far.

There are usually 2 kidneys, but a person can live a normal life with just one. However without dialysis treatment a person can not survive without any kidneys.

Dialysis can keep a person alive for a while. Still dialysis eventually fails and the patient dies.
