Revolution in the Air

Oppression - an unfortunate occurrence that has happened in society as long as there have been people to oppress. The history of the world may as well be understood as a history of oppression, because almost every historical incident has happened because people were exploited. Most of the time oppression happens because a government feels unstable and desires to remain in power. When a government oppresses its people, the oppressed tend to try to revolt. During World War I, the Russians revolted against their government and created a communist society. In the novel, 1984, Winston and Julia sought after a revolution, but revolution was unthinkable because of the power of Big Brother. In A Tale of Two Cities, the oppressed citizens revolted against the government and aristocracy. In the case of World War II, the Jews were incapable of revolution because they got cut down to focus on survival only. Oppression is at the root of all of the problems people faced in those events and books.

In World War I, the Russians revolted against their czar and created a communist country. Czar Nicholas II caused some of the most disastrous and bloody wars Russia had ever seen, so the people wanted him out. I learned that they had success because revolutionaries sought after a common goal, the communist manifesto. Although the new communist reign seemed good for a while, eventually certain members of society edged their way to the top of the pyramid, negating the communist manifesto. People will permanently have that desire and lust for power and status, only because that's engrained into human nature. The Russian communist society may have been a successful revolution from the czar, but in the end equality did not grow to become an aspect in the people's eyes.

In the book, 1984, Winston and Julia aspired to revolt, but failed because of the constant watchful eye of Big Brother. The inner Party oppressed the outer Party and proles by stealing away all freedoms they had, even the freedom of thought. When constantly monitored and scrutinized, people have no control over their lives or actions, taking away the ability to revolt. The totalitarianism government of the Party may have been malevolent and evil, but they were also very clever by keeping all of their people oppressed and powerless, canceling out the possibility to revolt. Also, by taking away all rights and freedoms, the Party made sure that the oppressed saved all of their emotions to direct against enemies of the Party in a Two Minute Hate or Hate Week, which created a false patriotism within the people. When Winston and Julia attempted to revolt, they became shocked to discover that a friend really has been setting them up for their whole lives. People can't trust anyone in that world, which assists the government because a single person can't start a revolution by themselves, but can't trust anyone enough to organize a group. Winston and Julia tried to revolt, but unfortunately failed at the hands of Big Brother and the Party.

In A Tale of Two Cities, the oppressed were starved and taxed to death to pay for the lavish, luxurious lives of the aristocracy. Eventually, they had enough and a family called the Defarges organized an extremely bloody revolution. When people at the bottom of the food chain are impoverished to the point of drinking wine off of the street, they lose all human kindness inside them. As soon as the revolution started, heads came off as fast as the guillotine could drop. When a government enjoys that extravagant of a lifestyle while the rest of the country lives in squalor, it can be assumed that the poor will build up a burning hatred for the aristocracy. That hatred of the aristocracy led to an unfathomable death count. They may have had success in their revolution, but they brought to life how brutal people are when they are pushed into complete destitution.

In World War II, the Jews could not even imagine the idea of a revolution because they had to have an absolute focus on surviving. Hitler and his Nazi party may have been brutal and sadistic, but they had a sense of brilliancy in the way that they managed to contain over six million people without revolution. By limiting their food and water to a bare minimum, the Jews became so malnourished that they needed to put all of their effort towards surviving until their next meal, leaving out any possible thoughts of starting a revolution. I learned how far people can go in order to survive. The Jews literally existed on the brink of death every day they continued on in the camps, and yet somehow they managed to survive. People fought against their own families for food. That goes to show that if someone gets stuck in a situation where the odds favor death, that person will do anything to get out.

When a government oppresses its people, the oppressed tend to try to revolt. Oppression evolved throughout our history and literature, and through World War I, World War II, 1984, and A Tale of Two Cities, we see different types of revolutions against that oppression. Some may have failed, but the knowledge we learned from them is infinite.
