It is unlikely to cause high blood pressure, though not unheard of. When it does it is mild. In fact it is more likely (though still rare) to cause mild low blood pressure.

It can lower sodium levels so you should not take hypertension treatments like diuretics.

The drug is from the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The 'reuptake' refers to activity of the nerves in the brain. By stopping the serotonin from being 'cleared' after release at the nerve ends, it hangs around longer to exert a beneficial effect on mood.

If you have notice that your blood pressure is raised, you should see your doctor.

My son died July of 2007. I was prescribed Lexapro 10mg by my physician. The first night I took a pill, I could not sleep and my blood pressure was elevated. I called my doctor and he tried to say that it was not the Lexapro but as soon as I stopped taking it my pressure went back to normal. Please know that I have had high blood pressure for 10 years and am well aware of when there is suddenly a difference. I was very disappointed in my doctor and am considering changing him. The same doctor prescribed my husband Lexapro a month later and his blood pressure also went up. He stopped taking it and his blood pressure went right back to normal. He called the same doctor and once again he said he doubted that it was the Lexapro that raised his blood pressure.

Good Question!

I am a 36 year old female, who was put on celexa for anxiety treatment. Two months into treatment, my blood pressure went sky high. I have never-ever had a bad BP, so it really put me & my Doctor on notice. NO family history of high BP at all, so I am inclined to think that it's the celexa, however the Dr. wasn't so sure...

I immediately went on the Dash diet. It's been about a month and half now, and my BP is still high. So, I have decided to quit taking the celexa and see what happens to my BP.

I get my BP checked each Thursday evening, and will report back to let you know how it's going.
