RAM stands for 'Random Access Memory', its your computer's 'working memory' much like how your short-term memory is used to remember the current tasks you are doing. When the computer is powered off, the RAM is automatically cleared, and whenever you do something on the computer (like launch a program) that program is temporarily stored in the RAM until it is closed. The contents of your RAM will change all the time as you do different things with your programs (like open a website in your web browser). So yes, it's possible to change the contents of your RAM, because these contents are always changing.

Just like any type of storage, it depends on whether you have permissions to do so. Usually it's the case where the system administrative accounts that are able to do so.

Can ram be modified?

Yes RAM can be modified, but to be able to do so you need to get a stick of RAM or a RAM card which can be bought at most stores. A good place to find RAM would be a site called NewEgg.com. After you get the RAM card you will have to open up your computer case and find what are commonly known as expansion card slots. They will be noticeable, as they will be on the motherboard itself and will look like rectangular slots.

What is a type of computer memory that retains content until loss of power?

RAM

Why would you need a storage device for your computer?

Because the computer can only run programs that reside in RAM. RAM is volatile; it loses its content when power is removed from it. "Storage" is non-volatile; retains its content when power is removed from it.

Which type of memory is primarily used in cache memory?

Cache memory is composed of 2 types of memory:RAM (Random Access Memory) this is used to store the data copied from main RAM as a series of Cache LinesCAM (Content Addressable Memory) this is used to store the main RAM address for each Cache Line, so the data in Cache Memory can be found and associated with main RAM. The CAM also typically contains special flags (e.g. the "dirty" bit - indicating that the Cache Line has been modified and will have to be written back to main RAM).Cache memory also contains controller logic to coordinate the necessary actions. The first computer built to have what we now call Cache memory was the IBM Stretch 7030 introduced in 1961. However IBM at the time called this feature "Virtual memory". (Confusing isn't it?)

What are the similarities between RAM and ROM?

Both of them serve for somewhat similar purpose ie storing Although in a different way. ROM /BIOS (BASIC INPUT OUTPUT SYSTEM ) Both of them have flat shape . RAM (Random Access Memory) can be modified. ROM ( Read only memory) is just that, Read only. Both are "chip" based memory, but only RAM can me modified.

Can ram be overwritten?

No RAM is not. Open source products such as memtest86 found here http://www.memtest86.com actually overwrite RAM and then checks it for inconsistencies to see if memory is bad.
