In "To Kill a Mockingbird," Winston County, Alabama is mentioned as the birthplace of Atticus Finch's wife, Scout and Jem's mother. Winston County is known for its historical roots as a fiercely independent region that opposed secession during the Civil War. This background reflects the Finch family's values of standing up for what is right and just, even in the face of adversity.
The northwest county of Winston set itself apart from most of AL during the Civil War, declaring that if a state could secede from a country then a county could secede from a state. There does not appear to have been a vote to secede from the state but rather a refusal to secede from the Union. Winston County chose to remain neutral in the war, declaring itself the Republic of Winston. It did, however, allow Union troops the unobstructed use of its roads when they came through the area. The Confederacy refused to recognize the county's independence and sought unsuccessfully throughout the war to assert control over the independent-minded "Free State of Winston."
Alabama seceded from the Union on January 11, 1861, but when Alabama seceded from the Union, the northeastern county of Winston seceded from Alabama. Alabama was expected to secede. It had a large slave population and their leaders saw secession as their best way to keep the status quo.
