The obvious answer is influenza. The flu virus is what causes you to get the flu.

Complications of the flu can be pneumonia (viral or bacterial) and other secondary respiratory infections such as bronchitis. It can cause sepsis (whole body infection with pathogens in the blood stream-"blood poisoning"). It can cause laryngitis from coughing. It can cause dehydration and associated imbalances of the electrolytes (such as blood sodium levels and potassium levels), constipation and kidney and liver damage from the dehydration. It can cause Reye Syndrome in patients who are 18 and younger if they are taking aspirin therapy (do not give aspirin to anyone in that age group for the flu without specific instructions from their doctor). It can cause Guillian-Barre Syndrome in some people. It can cause exacerbations (increases in symptoms or uncontrolled symptoms) of underlying medical conditions such as Diabetes mellitus, Asthma, COPD/emphysema of lungs, CHF and other heart diseases, chronic and acute kidney failure, respiratory system failure, liver failure, hematological conditions (blood disorders), neurological conditions, neuromuscular conditions and other systemic medical conditions.

The thing that causes the flu is a virus. Viruses can cause symptoms. But, symptoms can not cause a virus. Symptoms are the things that let you know something is wrong when you are sick, like vomiting with a "stomach flu" or like coughing with the regular flu. A symptom is the bleeding when you are cut or the pain when you are bruised. Symptoms are the signs that tell you that you are ill. Pathogens and germs are what cause the illnesses that cause the symptoms. So, for example for the flu, the germ involved is a flu virus. For strep throat, the germs involved are bacteria.

The influenza virus is the germ that causes the flu. The flu is the illness caused by the influenza virus. Coughing and sneezing are two of the symptoms that let us know we have caught a flu virus.

Flu virus infection. There are two main types of flu virus: one prefers to infect the lungs (respiratory) and is much like a bad cold but easily turns to pneumonia, the other prefers to infect the intestines and causes diarrhea, etc.

Does lead cause the flu?

No. Lead is poisonous, but the flu is caused by influenza viruses. Exposure to lots of lead could possibly make you more susceptible to other illness but it is indirectly related, if at all. Lead pollution is very serious and can cause serious damage and illness to exposed children and adults, however. It causes lung disease, toxic effects leading to kidney or liver damage, damage to the brain and nervous system and other affects on various body systems via air pollution, water pollution and ingestion of lead paint usually by children living in old houses.
