Press the AA button (only on kindle 2) when reading a book and a menu should pop up from the bottom of the screen. Use the 5-way controller to select "Turn on", under the words "Text to Speech". Wait about 30 seconds for it to load. Read the user's manual for more help.

On Amazon.com and your kindle, there will be a bullet point that reads "Text-to-Speech". If the kindle will read to you, it will be followed by "Enabled". Otherwise, it will say "Not "Enabled".
If you have purchased the book already, press the font button. There will be a "Text-to-Speech" option. If it is gray, then this means that the kindle will not read the book out loud. If it is in black ink, then the kindle can read the to you. Scroll down and select the option to turn it on.

∙ 12y agoIt can, if you go to Aa and select Text-to-Speech. It is not available for all books, but it is for some. It also isn't very good, as it mushes words together, but it is there.
