I think you mean the 'North Star' ; note the spelling ; NOT 'Start'.

It also goes by the name of 'Pole Star' and 'Polaris'.

When directly above (90 degrees) you are at the North Pole.

When its angle of elevation above the horizon is 89 degrees. you are at latitude of 89 degrees.

When you are at latitude 49 degrees (49th parallel), it is 49 degrees above the horizon.

When you are at the Equator ( latitude 0 degrees) it is on the horizon. However, you probably cannot see it at this latitude because dust dirt particles in the air.

South of the Equator you cannot see it , as it is below the horizon.

In the Southern Hemisphere there is no corresponding pole star. Navigators use the constellation named the 'Southern Cross', in order to determine latitude.

The angle between the horizon and the north star is roughly equal to the observer's

North latitude ... always within about 2/3 of a degree. This only works for locations

north of the equator. The north star isn't visible at all from places south of the equator.

Which are used measure distances north or south of the equator?

lines of latitude

What do lines of latitude measure on earth?

Lines of latitude and longitude are used to form a grid encompassing the globe so that any position can be identified and located. Latitude is used to measure distance north and south of the equator, while longitude is used to measure distance east and west of the prime meridian.

What is used to measure the distance north or south of the equator?

It is called latitude.

Why does the equator represent zero degrees latitude?

I believe it dates back to when the North Star was used to find latitude by ancient sailors. Degrees latitude was found by the angle between the North Star and the horizon. Since the North Star sits on the horizon at the equator the angle is zero therefore latitude is zero degrees.

What are the lines of latitude used for?

To measure the distance on the Earth's surface North or South of the Equator.

What are used to measure distances north and south of the equator?

The lines used to measure distances north and south of the equator are latitude lines. They include the equator (0 degrees latitude) and equidistant circles between the equator and the poles. Latitude lines represent the surface points having the same angle from the equator, and planes perpendicular to the Earth's north-south axis.

Can a single satellite be used to calculate latitude and longitude?

You need at least 3 satellites. More is always better.

Latitude is used to locate what?

Latitude identifies your distance from the equator, and whether north or south of it. It is measured in degrees north or south. One degree of latitude is 60 nautical miles (by definition). A nautical mile is about 70 statute miles (aka land miles).

How does latitude work?

Latitude specifies the specific north or south position of a point on the surface of the Earth. Lines of latitude start from the Equator (0 degrees) and work their way up to the North Pole or South Pole (90 degrees). Used with lines of longitude, you can pinpoint the exact location of any point on the surface of the Earth. For example, New York City lies as 40 degrees and 40 minutes North and 73 degrees and 56 minutes West on the surface of the Earth.

Is Rochester NY closer to the North Pole or the Equator?

The beach at Charlotte ("shar-LOTT"), where we used to get Abbot's frozen custard (are they still there ???),is at latitude 43.3° north.45° north is the half-way latitude, so you'd have to say that Rochester is nearer to the equatorthan it is to the north Pole.

What northern star can be used to find your latitude in the Northern hemisphere?

Polaris can be used to determine latitude in the northern hemisphere as it is directly overhead from the north geographic pole. The sun can be used for the same purpose if proper tables are available.
