I'LL ANSWER MY OWN QUESTION, YES THE STARTER CAN BE REMOVED WITHOUT HAVING TO TAKE TO THE REPAIR SHOP. IT IS A REAL PAIN THOUGH REQUIRING REMOVAL OF EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND NUMEROUS OTHER PARTS TO MAKE ROOM TO GET IT OUT OVER THE FRAME, BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND FRAME AND OUT THROUGH THE WHEELWELL. MY SON SAID PEP BOYS TOLD HIM THERE WAS NO WAY WITHOUT BRINGING TO A SHOP. I TOLD HIM IF THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY, BUT WHAT A PAIN IT IS. MY OLD Ford AEROSTAR TAKES 30 MINUTES TO REMOVE AND REPLACE IT'S STARTER. THIS WILL TAKE A TOTAL OF 10 HOURS ATLEAST FOR ME TO GET IT ALL BACK TOGETHER.
form_title=Repair Remote Start form_header=A remote starter is difficult to repair and is best left to the professionals. How long have you had the remote starter?=_ Please describe the issues you are having:=_ What happens when you try to turn it on?=_
The starter on a 93 Geo Metro is located on the back side or firewall side of the engine. The battery will need to be disconnected and the cables removed from the solenoid and then the two bolts holding the starter to the engine can be removed. When installing the starter make the battery connection the last thing you do.
I removed mine myself and had it rebuilt by a small starter repair guy. It cost me $50. You have to jack up the car and remove it from underneath, so you need some tools if you want to do it yourself. Never get under a car without jackstands in place. I would think that if you took it to a mechanic and he bought a rebuilt starter ($95 dollars at AZ) it would cost between $150-200.
This is how I did it. Disconnect the battery negative terminal. I removed the right drive shaft. This made it possible to reach the starter from under the vehicle. Then I removed the brace that bolts to the block and intake manifold. Then remove the electrical connections on the starter, one with a 12mm wrench from under the car, the other is a plug you can reach from the top (if your arm is skinny enough!). Then remove the starter top bolt from above. It threads into the starter from the transmission side. Then, from under the car, remove the starter bottom bolt. The starter can then be removed from under the car. As many a repair manual has advised: "Assemble in reverse order of removal." Good luck!
The average cost to repair a starter is anywhere between $50 to $250 dollars. The starter is responsible for starting the car's engine.
Sutures are removed three to 14 days after the repair is completed.

The best option is probably to replace the entire starter.
same that was removed
The starter probably has a short in one of the windings. So the power from the battery is flowing through the cable, through the starter and straight to ground. This is overloading the starter cable as it is not designed for that sort of load and is cooking itself. I suggest pulling the starter off and bringing it to an auto parts store to have it tested, or having the car towed to a repair garage for them to inspect and likely replace the starter.
aRE YOU ASKING THIS TO REPAIR WHAT SPECIFICALLY?
If you really don't know where a starter is, I suggest obtaining a repair manual.
