Once your child is 18, he's on his own. Unless you are divorced and college was included in the divorce decree.
If you were order by the court to pay child support, that support will continue until the child either graduates college or stops attending. I do not believe the court can order you to pay for college. However, as a father you should be willing to help.
It depends on what was stipulated in the custody/child support agreement. In some agreements, it is expressly written that upon graduation from high school and the beginning of college that the father will pay all, or a percentage of tuition and expenses. In some cases it will state only tuition, of that mom and dad will share fifty/fifty. Looks at the child support papers. If it is not noted, look farther, and then re-check with your attorney.
In most cases, the non-custodial parent has to pay half or more of the college expenses, unless it was stated in the divorce decree that college would not be paid for. I know, because I am the custodial parent and my ex was ordered to pay 65% of college expenses in addition to child support. Lucky for him, though, we qualified for financial-aid for college and all he had to pay was child support. (Which he tried to get out of many times)It's more like the opposite - the non-custodial parent is under no obligation to pay for college unless the order for support specifically provides for it.
Technically, parents are not obligated to pay for their child's college education since college is elective. It is the parents' choice whether to pay for a student's college fees or not. As for filing tax returns, you might want to get current on that, especially if you can claim your child as a dependent. You might avoid penalties and liens on your possesions...
Only if court ordered.
There is no law or regulation in Illinois that requires the NCP to pay for the child's college.
Depends on the laws in your state and the child support order.
That depends on individual state laws.
you have to pay child support as long as your child is under 18 years of age
No unless the child is under 18 or it has been previously agreed upon in a decree. Texas does not have child support for adults in college.
Depends on your state laws and what your child support agreement says but you have to pay at least until the child is 18.
None. Since the "child" is 18 and an adult the parent no longer needs to pay child support. You may wish to help your child while in college, but it is not mandatory.
No. Outside of child support you cannot force him to help out with college tuition and fees. Although he must continue to pay child support until the child either graduates from college or stops attending.
It depends on the rules of your state. In Oregon, yes.
That is dependent on state law and your specific orders. In most states, no. But there are those that do require it, with some requiring that you also pay for the college education.
I assume you're talking about online courses, and yes, if your state law or court order, requires child support through college. Dads House
It depends on the state. In most states, child support ends by the age of 21 (more often 18).
