Can the water pump of 1994 Jeep Cherokee causes overheating?

why a jeep Cherokee is over heating?Hey i don't know alot about jeeps but i know a bit about chrylslers, dodges. ok the water pump pumps water through the motor back into the radiator then back in the motor and it continues as long as the water pump is moving and isn't defected. the first thing i do when a cars over heating is check the fluid ,2.chang thermostate(its connected to the hose that is usually on the top of the radiator and goes to the motor) at the bottom of that hose theres the thermostate housing, take it off and theres the thermostate take it out and buy a new one( if your vehicle isn't computer controled you can take it out and put fluid in it and put every thing back and try it, if it fixes your problem then you got it , go and buy a new thermostate.3 when running open radiator and look and see if fluid is moving one way or another, if it doesnt then your radiator could be clogged or the water pump is to blame.
