One can download Messenger for Vista for free from the Microsoft website and the Messenger website. Windows Messenger has now altered to Skype. Skype has the messenger service as well as video calling to friends and family. One can have one account with Skype which can be accessed through several devices such as an ipad, computer, phone and consoles.
Usually, if you did not have 'Skype' then the alternative would be 'Windows Live Messenger' if you have a web cam and a mic. then this should work out fine if you both use messenger and accept the invite.
