Cookies do not slow your computer down.

Too many cookies or temporary internet files might slow down a badly-written web browser (possibly some versions of Internet Explorer).

Accessing a cookie on a badly fragmented hard disk may also slow your web browser down (much like pulling a book from a bookshelf that is alphabetized versus finding a book in a pile of books).

But they CANNOT slow down the computer in general. Only your web browser ever looks at this data.

(Your computer might behave badly if it runs out of disk space. If you are out of disk space deleting temporary internet files might free some up. The cookies don't take up much space though.)

Cookies are saved on your computer from Surfing the internet. A cookie is data from the website, making the website load faster if you have cookies saved, the next time you load it. (Not too noticeable on highspeed internet, but really makes a difference for dial-up users!) Cookies are also a risk of viruses, because if you save them automatically, if the website contains a virus, it is automatically saved to your HDD

{food cookies}

Well depending on if you leave the cookie on the keyboard so if you don't then no so be careful because cookies have grease on them. :).

{Tracking cookies}

Tracking Cookies aren't exactly harmful to your computer. They just are really annoying and and can invade your privacy. By invade your privacy, I mean some tracking cookies can track what you do on the internet and what you type in. Though they aren't like viruses or anything.

Cookies won't directly cause slow operation unless you are extremely low on hard disk space. If your laptop is running slow I'd suggest getting Advanced Systemcare from IOBit.com. It's a free program which is good at clearing out the junk that computers accumulate over time.

Well it does and it doesn't .. and there's more to it ...

Each time you visit a web page, your web browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari etc) saves (caches) those pages, images, YouTube video's and so on to your computer. 'Cookies', which are small files that save information on the go are a part of the caching. Cookies remember the little things, such as the items you enter in a on-line shopping cart, sign-in details to your favourite web sites and so on. This makes it faster the next time you go to that web site as the browser has less to load over the wire. The browser is using stored 'cached' pages and cookie files..

You computer will slow down when surfing the internet when the amount of cached pages increases to a large extent and Cookies are out of date or expired. Also, the web sites may have changed their pages, video's, text and so on. Sometimes the 'cached stored pages' and Cookies may corrupt or encounter issues connecting with the original web site. In these instances, your Internet experience will slow down considerably.

It's a good idea to clear the 'cached' pages and 'Cookies' at least once a month. i clear mine daily and my computer is super fast.

Of course! Tracking cookies (or any type of computer cookies, for that matter), can slow the performance of your laptop or desktop computer, whether it be a Mac or PC, etc.

Are cookies good for your computer?

They can be convenient. Sites where you must log in will offer to "remember" you - what they're really doing is putting a tracking cookie on your computer that matches your IP address to the account information, so they recognize the IP address when you visit the site and know it's you. Cookies are generally harmless but if you have too many, they can clog up your computer and possibly slow it down. CCleaner is a good, free program that lets you remove cookies for sites you don't use much.
