What happens to your respiratory system when your pH is low?

If blood pH drops due to metabolic reasons (this is called metabolic acidosis) the body is said to have a decreased buffer capacity. This means that it has fewer resources to mop up hydrogen ions which make the blood acidic. The body immediately and rapidly compensates for such a drop in pH by increasing the breathing rate.
