yes, you can some people think you can't but you can. of course hamsters can fit their head throw but you can put some kind of plastic on the INSIDE so they can't climb or fit their head throw. I always wanted to do this but I never had the time until now

You could get a C&C cage. It is the cheapest and gives your Guinea Pigs the minimum space required for them.
It's hugely unlikely that the hamster died b/c of biting you. More likely it bit b/c it was already feeling ill, and then died.
