You can use skype instant messaging without a microphone and you can still call your contacts but they will not be able to hear you. As long as you have working speakers you will be able to hear them and can type messages just like in msn or yim etc.

∙ 10y agoSkype services can be used without the use of a webcam. The voice and message services are usable without the use of a webcam. This can be accomplished with having the webcam disabled as well.

The other person has the the video turned off. At the bottom of their Skype window is a video camera icon. Their's probably has a slash through it. Clicking on the icon will activate the video. Each side decides whether or not video is sent.
