You can bake the ham and yams in the oven at the same time. If you are baking the ham for several hours, put the yams in about an hour before the ham is finished. Or put the yams in at the same time as the ham, and test them by piercing with a fork after about 45 minutes.
To bake yams with brown sugar and marshmallows, first preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Peel and slice the yams, then place them in a baking dish. Mix brown sugar, melted butter, and a pinch of salt, then pour this mixture over the yams. Bake for about 30 minutes, then sprinkle mini marshmallows on top and return to the oven for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the marshmallows are golden and bubbly.
You don't have to. Some people like to wrap it because they won't have to clean the bottom of the stove afterwards. I never use foil (makes the yam a bit soggy to me). I just put the yams ontop of some foil and bake them that way.
They can be cooked either way, but if you bake them the flavors are concentrated and the sugars are caramelized. They taste much better baked.
